Exemptions and Challenge Testing

If you have taken an equivalent post-secondary computer application course, using Microsoft Office 2010, applications Windows, Word, Excel, Powerpoint & Outlook, with a grade of B or higher within the last 5 years, you may qualify for an exemption from your CSA course.

Simply fill out an exemption request form and take it to the CSA program coordinator (Michelle Lee at Casa Loma; Denise Pontone for St James and Ryerson) along with your transcript and an official course outline describing the course. We will review your request and respond quickly to let you know whether you have been exempted.

Follow this link to download a PDF of the exemption request form.

If you have not taken an equivalent post-secondary course, but have considerable expertise in computer applications, we encourage you to take the Challenge Test. Challenge testing is available in weeks 2, 3, and 4 each term.

Minimum passing grade on the Challenge Test is the same as for the course: 80% or higher. Students who pass the Challenge Test have finished the course and will receive a "Passed" grade on that term's transcript.

Expect to spend anywhere from 90 minutes to three hours on the Challenge Test.

Students who have taken and passed COMP1082 at GBC in a previous semester do not need to apply for an exemption. The course is part of your academic history at GBC, so all you have to do is drop the subject off your timetable. Please see your academic department for further information.
