Expectations for Student Behaviour

Establish expectations for student conduct online, just as you would in a classroom setting. The following points should be considered:

  • establish standards for student behaviour that will ensure academic integrity and appropriate uses of the Internet and written communication.
  • identify how you will deal with issues that arise from inappropriate use of electronically accessed data or information
  • inform students of their right to privacy and the conditions under which their names, e-mail addresses or online submissions may be shared with others
  • identify inappropriate material to send (e.g., chain letters, jokes, virus warnings).

Online students should be referred to the GBC equity statement and to the following resources:

EQUITY STATEMENT:

George Brown College values the talents and contributions of its students, staff and community partners and seeks to create a welcoming environment where equity, diversity and safety of all groups are fundamental.  Language or activities which are inconsistent with this philosophy violate the College policy on the Prevention of Discrimination and Harassment and will not be tolerated.  The commitment and cooperation of all students and staff are required to maintain this environment.  Information and assistance are available through your Chair, Student Affairs, the Student Association or the Human Rights Advisor.

Please review the following college policies for expectations for behaviours that apply to both the classroom, and the online environment.

STUDENT RESPONSIBILITIES:  Students should obtain a copy of the Student Handbook and refer to it for additional information regarding the grading system, withdrawals, exemptions, class assignments, missed tests and exams, supplemental privileges, and academic dishonesty.  Students are required to apply themselves diligently to the course of study, and to prepare class and homework assignments as given.  Regular attendance and/or online participation, though not a requirement, is strongly advised.  Past student performance shows a strong relationship between regular attendance and/or online participation and success.
